The WBEF helps award college scholarships each year to deserving Western Boone seniors planning to further their education. These scholarships come from families and groups/organizations that wish to promote higher education by recognizing and rewarding Western Boone students for their achievements. See below for the name and description of each scholarship.
Beam Family Scholarship: $2,000 per year
Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.0. Applicants must submit an essay on the topic "What are my future goals and why I need financial assistance in meeting these goals." Two reference letters must also be submitted, one of which must be from a teacher or employer. A copy of a completed FAFSA form or tax return is required, as financial need is a component of this scholarship. Scholarship is renweable if the winner maintains above a 2.0 GPA in college and submits annual college transcripts to the superintendent by June of each year. Interviews will be conducted.
Lough Family Scholarship: $250
Open to seniors pursing a medical career.
Duane Swisher Swimmer Scholarship: $250
Open to senior swimmers with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants must have had good swim attendance according to current swim coach's rules and must have displayed strong work ethic, leadership, and a positive mental attitude in the classroom and in the pool. Applicants must also be involved in community/volunteer work. A short essay is required on what hard work in the classroom and in the pool means to the applicant, along with one reference letter from a current or former coach.
Earl Hoock Scholarship: $1,100
Open to seniors who plan to further their education in science, mathematics, or engineering. Preference is given to applicants who plan to attend Purdue University. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and obtain two reference letters, one of which must be from a math or science teacher.
Kent Poole Athletic Scholarship: $250
Open to seniors who have participated in high school sports and have displayed leadership and a positive attitude. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.0, a reference letter from a current or former coach, and a list of sports participated in while in high school.
Natalie Duke Memorial Scholarship: $250
Open to seniors who have been involved in art classes and/or participated in high school sports. Applicants must have displayed a positive attitude and consistently given their best efforts while encouraging others to do the same. Applicants must submit a list of art classes and/or sports participated in while in high school. A minimum GPA of 2.0 is expected.
Ron Bush Scholarship: $2,000
Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.0 who were 4-H members in Boone County. Applicants must submit an essay on the topic "How has 4-H provided me direction toward my future?" Two reference letters (one from a teacher or employer) are required. Finalist interviews will be conducted.
Roscoe D. and J. Charlene Stewart Scholarship: $1,000
Open to seniors who attended Thorntown Elementary School. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and submit a reference letter from a current or former teacher.
Sandy Heffner Education Scholarship: $900
Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Applicants must submit an essay on the topic "How will a degree in education help you change the life of a child?" along with a reference letter from a teacher or non-family person.
Saxton-Schrier Alumni Scholarship: $1,000
Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Preference is given to applicants who plan to attend selective out-of-state schools and/or study humanities or social sciences, but all are encouraged to apply. Applicants should be able to demonstrate ambition, positive contributions to school culture / the community, and/or commitment to public service. A personal statement outlining academic goals is required. Two reference letters are also required, one of which must be from an English teacher. Finalist interviews will be conducted.
Brian Euler Scholarship: $1,000
Open to seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.0 pursuing a field of study in criminal justice or health care. Applicant must have participated in at least one varsity sport.
Sydney Foster Scholarship: TBD
Open to seniors who are pursuing a nursing degree.
